To Chatterton – John Keats

‘টু চ্যাটারটন’ সম্ভবত কিটসের লেখা তৃতীয় কবিতা। এই কবিতার বিষয় ইংরেজ কবি টমাস চ্যাটারটনের আত্মহত্যা, যদিও চ্যাটারটনের মৃত্যু পুরোপুরি অপ্রত্যাশিত নয়, তবু তার এই সিদ্ধান্ত ইংরেজ সাহিত্যের জগতে বেশ বড়সড় নাড়া দিয়েছিল। মাত্র ১১ বছর বয়সে নিজের প্রথম কবিতার বই প্রকাশ করেন তিনি, তাঁর সেই পরিণত কাব্যবোধ দেখে সমসাময়িকরাও বেশ হতবাক হন। খুব দ্রুত তিনি জনপ্রিয় হয়ে উঠলেও, সেই সঙ্গে ধীরে ধীরে গভীর বিষণ্ণতা তাঁর হৃদয়ে বাসা বাঁধতে থাকে। কেন তিনি এত অল্প বয়সেই এমন দুঃখে ডুবে গেলেন, তা নিয়ে নানা গল্প চালু আছে। সবচেয়ে প্রচলিত গল্পটা এমন: একদিন হঠাৎ একটা সদ্য খুঁড়ে রাখা কবরে পা পিছলে পড়ে যান চ্যাটারটন। তারপর থেকেই নিয়মিত কবরস্থানে যাওয়া শুরু হয় তাঁর, বসে বসে পড়তেন মৃতদের সমাধিলিপি। সেই সময় থেকেই মৃত্যু নিয়ে এক ধরণের মোহ গড়ে ওঠে তাঁর মনে, আর জীবনের প্রতি আগ্রহ হারাতে থাকেন। মাত্র ১৭ বছর বয়সে, একদিন আর্সেনিক খেয়ে শেষ করে দেন নিজের জীবন। তাঁর মৃত্যুর পর অনেকে সেই ঘটনাকে কেন্দ্র করে শিল্প ও কাব্য সৃষ্টি করেছেন। হেনরি ওয়ালিসের বিখ্যাত চিত্রকর্ম ‘দা ডেথ অফ চ্যাটারটন’ তার সবচেয়ে পরিচিত উদাহরণ। পাশাপাশি কোলরিজ, ওয়ার্ডসওয়ার্থ, কিটসের মতো কবিরাও তাঁকে নিয়ে শোকগাঁথা লিখেছেন। তখনকার সময়ে এমন শোককবিতা লেখা ছিল খুব স্বাভাবিক ব্যাপার, যেমন কিটসের মৃত্যুর পর শেলি লিখেছিলেন ‘আদোনাইস’।

আগেই বলেছি কিটসের জীবন কেটেছে মৃত্যুচিন্তায়। তিনি নিজে চ্যাটারটনকে কখনো দেখেননি, তাঁর জন্মই হয়েছিল চ্যাটারটনের মৃত্যুর ২৫ বছর পর। কিন্তু যখন কবিতা পড়া শুরু করলেন, তখনই চ্যাটারটনের জীবনের গল্পের প্রতি যেন এক অদ্ভুত টান অনুভব করলেন। এই তরুণ, বিষণ্ণ প্রতিভার গল্প তাঁকে গভীরভাবে নাড়া দেয়, আর সেই অনুপ্রেরণাতেই লেখেন ‘টু চ্যাটারটন’ নামে এই সনেটটি। কবিতার অষ্টকে (প্রথম আট চরণ) তিনি চ্যাটারটনের জীবনের দুঃখগাঁথা তুলে ধরেছেন, আর ষষ্টকে (শেষ ছয় চরণ) তাঁর প্রতি শ্রদ্ধা, ভালোবাসা আর একধরনের আশ্বাস দিয়েছেন, যেন চ্যাটারটনের আত্মা এখন আকাশে তারা-ভরা গানে ভেসে বেড়াচ্ছে।

কবিতা অনুবাদ করা এমনি কিছুটা কঠিন কেননা কবিতার ভাব ঠিক রাখতে গেলে কবিতার আদল ঠিক রাখা কঠিন হয়ে যায় এবং উল্টোটাও সত্যি। এজন্য অনেকেই কবিতা অনুবাদের ক্ষেত্রে কবিতার ভাবকে প্রাধান্য দিয়ে আদলকে যথাযথভাবে অটুট রাখার চেষ্টা করেন না। তবে আমি চেষ্টা করেছি কবিতার গঠন এবং ভাব দুটোই ঠিক রাখার, কারণ আমি মনে করি, কবিতার আদল এবং কবিতার ভাব দুটোই সমান গুরুত্বপূর্ণ, একটিকে অন্যটির চেয়ে বেশী প্রাধান্য দিয়ে দিলে সেটি আর কবিতা থাকে না। আমি প্রথমে ইংরেজি অক্ষরে কবিতাটি দিয়েছি, এরপরে বাংলায় সেটার অনুবাদ করার চেষ্টা করেছি। অনুবাদের সময় মূল কবিতার প্রতি শ্রদ্ধা রেখে, অষ্টকের চরণগুলোর প্রত্যেকটিতে আমি আটটি শব্দ ব্যবহার করেছি, ষষ্টকের প্রত্যেকটি চরণে আমি ছয়টি শব্দ ব্যবহার করেছি, এবং কবিতার মিলবিন্যাস ‘কখখককখখক গগগগগগ’ কেও অক্ষুণ্ণ রেখেছি। অনুবাদ কতোটা ভালো কিংবা কতোটা খারাপ হয়েছে, সেটা বিচার করার যোগ্যতা আমার নাই, সেই দায় অন্যদের হাতে ছাড়লাম, আমার জানার দৌড় যতটুক, তা দিয়ে এর চেয়ে ভালো অনুবাদ আমার পক্ষে করা সম্ভব নয়। অনুবাদ কিংবা মুল কবিতাটি সম্পর্কে কোনো মতামত থাকলে, সেটি আমাকে জানালে কৃতার্থ হবো।

বাংলা লিখতে আমি ‘অভ্র’ ব্যবহার করেছি, এই সফটঅয়্যারটির প্রতি আমার অশেষ কৃতজ্ঞতা জ্ঞাপন করছি, নয়তো এই কাজে আরও অনেক বেশী সময় লাগতো।

‘To Chatterton’ is likely the third poem written by Keats. Its subject is the suicide of the English poet Thomas Chatterton. While Chatterton’s death can’t exactly be called sudden, it undoubtedly shook the English literary and artistic circles of the time. Chatterton published his first book of poems at the age of just 11; his peers were simultaneously astonished and entranced by the poetic maturity of this young boy. He quickly rose to fame, but along with it, a deep melancholy took root in his heart. There are various stories about why he became afflicted with depression. The most well-known goes like this: once, he slipped and fell into a freshly dug grave. From then on, he would often visit cemeteries and sit reading epitaphs on gravestones. Around this time, a kind of fascination with death began to form in his mind, and life started to feel meaningless to him. Eventually, at the age of just 17, he consumed arsenic and ended his life. After his death, a number of painters took Chatterton’s tragic end as their subject, the most famous being Henry Wallis’s ‘The Death of Chatterton’. Poets such as Samuel Coleridge, William Wordsworth, and John Keats also wrote elegies in his memory. At that time, writing such commemorative poems was a common practice, for instance, after Keats’s death, Percy Bysshe Shelley wrote ‘Adonais’ in his honor.

As I mentioned before, Keats lived his life under the shadow of death. He never saw Chatterton in person, he was born 25 years after Chatterton’s death. He learned about Chatterton only after he began reading poetry, and the life of this short-lived poet clearly stirred him deeply, prompting him to write this sonnet. In the octave (first eight lines) of this poem, he mourns Chatterton’s life and death; in the sestet (last six lines), he expresses well wishes and the admiration of those who appreciate Chatterton’s genius.

Translating poetry is always challenging: preserving the essence of a poem often comes at the cost of its form, and vice versa. That’s why many translators prioritize meaning over structure. But I have attempted to preserve both the structure and spirit of the poem—because I believe they are equally important. If one is sacrificed for the other, it ceases to be a poem. I presented the original poem first in English letters, followed by my attempt at translating it into Bangla. While translating, I paid tribute to the original by using exactly eight words per line in the octave, six words per line in the sestet, and I also maintained the original ABBAABBA CCCCCC rhyme scheme in Bangla form. Whether the translation is good or bad is not for me to judge—I leave that to others. Based on the limits of my understanding, I’ve done the best I can. If you have any thoughts about the original or the translation, I would be most grateful to hear them.

জন কিটসের প্রায় পুরো জীবনকেই বলা যেতে পারে “মৃত্যুভারাক্রান্ত”। তিনি মাত্র ৮ বছর বয়েসে এক দুর্ঘটনায় তাঁর বাবাকে হারান। কিটসের বাবা, টমাস কিটস তাঁর দুই ছেলেকে স্কুলে দিয়ে ফেরার পথে ঘোড়া থেকে পড়ে গিয়ে আহত হন, এবং পরবর্তীতে মস্তিষ্কের রক্তক্ষরণে মারা যান। যখন কিটসের বয়েস ১৪, তাঁর মা মারা যান যক্ষ্মায়। তাঁর মায়ের মৃত্যুর পর তিনি ডাক্তারি পড়া শুরু করেন এবং ২১ বছর বয়েসে তিনি ডাক্তারি পাশ করেন। আগেই বলেছি, তিনি প্রথম কবিতা লেখেন ১৮ বছর বয়েসে, যখন তিনি ডাক্তারি পড়ছিলেন। ডাক্তারি পাশ করার পর তিনি মনস্থির করেন যে তিনি চিকিৎসক না হয়ে কবি হবেন। তিনি শেষ কবিতা লেখেন ২৪ বছর বয়েসে, তিনি তখন নিজেও যক্ষ্মায় আক্রান্ত, ইতালিতে বসবাস করছেন স্বাস্থ্য উন্নতির আশায়। ক্ষণজন্মা এই কবি ১৮২১ সালের ২৩ ফেব্রুয়ারী মাত্র ২৫ বছর বয়েসে মৃত্যুবরণ করেন। অল্পবয়েসে বাবা-মার মৃত্যু এবং ডাক্তারি পড়ার সময়ে অসংখ্য রোগীর মৃত্যু নিজ চোখে দেখার কারণে, মৃত্যুচিন্তা সন্দেহাতীত ভাবেই কিটসের নিত্যসঙ্গী ছিল, তাঁর চিঠিগুলোতেও এর প্রমাণ মিলে। ‘অন ডেথ’ তাঁর লেখা দ্বিতীয় কবিতা। ১৮ বছর বয়েসী কবির মাত্র দ্বিতীয় কবিতার বিষয়বস্তুই মৃত্যু হওয়াটা তাই আমাদের খুব একটা অবাক করে না। এই কবিতায় তিনি মৃত্যুকে রোমান্টিকের চোখে দেখার চেষ্টা করেছেন যেখানে তিনি মৃত্যুকে ঘুম ভেঙে যাওয়া আর জীবনকে স্বপ্নের সাথে তুলনা করেছেন। তিনি আনন্দের মুহূর্তগুলোর ক্ষণস্থায়িত্ব নিয়ে আফসোস করেছেন, একই সাথে তিনি আনন্দকে উপভোগ করার কথাও বলেছেন। শত দুঃখের মাঝেও আমরা যে কখনো থেমে যেতে পারি না, এই অসহায়ত্বকেও স্বীকার করেছেন। আবার, মৃত্যু যে শেষ পর্যন্ত এক ভয়ঙ্কর সত্য তাও তিনি এড়িয়ে যান নি। সবমিলিয়ে এই কবিতাটি পাঠককে কিছুটা বিচলিত করবে এক মিশ্র অনুভুতিতে।

John Keats’s entire life could justifiably be described as “haunted by death.” At the age of only 8, he lost his father in an accident. His father, Thomas Keats, fell from a horse on his way back after dropping off his sons at school. He suffered a head injury and later died of a cerebral hemorrhage. When Keats was 14, his mother died of tuberculosis. After her death, he began studying apothecary and qualified as a surgeon at the age of 21. As I mentioned earlier, he wrote his first poem at 18, during the time of his medical training. After completion of his study, he made the conscious decision not to pursue apothecary, choosing instead to become a poet. He wrote his final poem at the age of 24, by which time he himself had contracted tuberculosis and was living in Italy in hopes of improving his health. This short-lived poet died on February 23, 1821 in Rome, Italy, at the age of just 25.

The early loss of both parents and the many deaths he witnessed during his medical training meant that death was undeniably a constant companion in Keats’s life. This is also evident in his letters. ‘On Death’ was the second poem he ever wrote. So it doesn’t surprise us that even at the age of 18, death had already become the subject of his second poetic attempt. In this poem, he tries to view death through a romantic lens, likening death to awakening from sleep and life to a dream. He expresses sorrow at the fleeting nature of joyful moments, while also encouraging us to savor them. At the same time, he acknowledges our helplessness—despite overwhelming sorrow, we cannot stop moving forward. And yet, he does not shy away from admitting that death, in the end, is a terrifying truth. Altogether, this poem leaves the reader with a strange blend of emotions—quietly unsettled and deeply contemplative.

An Imitation of Spenser – John Keats

আমরা রোমান্টিক বলতে সাধারণত প্রেম বুঝে থাকলেও, এই শব্দটির আসল মানে হচ্ছে সৌন্দর্যের খোঁজ করা। এই সুন্দর মানে শুধু তথাকথিত সুন্দর জিনিসের খোঁজ নয়, চারপাশের সবকিছু থেকে যা সুন্দর, যা আদর্শ, যা অভিপ্রেত, তাঁকে খুঁজে বের করার প্রচেষ্টাই হচ্ছে রোমান্টিকতা। একজন রোমান্টিকের চোখে সকালের সূর্য ওঠা, দীঘির জলে রোদের খেলা, কিংবা শান্ত হ্রদে আকাশের প্রতিচ্ছবি দেখতে পাওয়ার মতো সাধারণ ঘটনাও এক অনন্য অনুভুতির সৃষ্টি করে। তিনি এমন সবকিছু দেখতে পান, যা সাধারণের চোখ এড়িয়ে যায়। পাশ্চাত্যে রোমান্টিক যুগের শুরু প্রায় ১৭৫০ সালে, এবং শেষ হয় ১৮৩৭ সালে। খেয়াল করলে দেখা যাবে, যেকোনো সভ্যতায় যখনি জ্ঞান-বিজ্ঞানের বিকাশ হয়েছে, তার পূর্বে বিকাশ হয়েছে শিল্পের এবং কাব্যের। কারণ কবি এবং শিল্পীরা আমাদের কল্পনাশক্তির পুরোভাগে বসবাস করেন, রোমান্টিক যুগেও এর ব্যত্যয় হয়নি। বাংলায় রোমান্টিক যুগ এসেছে, পাশ্চাত্যে রোমান্টিক যুগ প্রায় শেষ হবার পরে। বাংলায় রোমান্টিক কবিদের মাঝে মাইকেল মধুসূদন দত্ত, বিহারীলাল চক্রবর্তী, রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর, কাজী নজরুল ইসলাম, মোহিতলাল মজুমদার, সত্যেন্দ্রনাথ দত্ত, সুকুমার রায় প্রমুখ প্রধান কবি হিশেবে পরিচিত।

পাশ্চাত্যে রোমান্টিক কবিদের মাঝে জন কিটস অন্যতম প্রধান কবি, অথচ তিনি কবিতা লিখেছেন মাত্র সাত বছর। কিটসের জন্ম ইংল্যান্ডের রাজধানী লন্ডনে, ৩১ অক্টোবর, ১৭৯৫ সালে। তিনি খুব অল্পবয়েসেই মা-বাবা দুজনকেই হারান, কিন্তু তাঁরা আর্থিকভাবে সচ্ছল হওয়ায়, কিটস এবং তাঁর ভাইবোনদেরকে খুব একটা আর্থিক অসঙ্গতির মধ্যে দিয়ে যেতে হয়নি। তাঁর কবিতা লেখার শুরু ১৯ বছর বয়েসে, ১৮১৪ সালে, “অ্যান ইমিটেশন অফ স্পেন্সার” কবিতা দিয়ে। এই কবিতাটি তিনি এলিজাবেথীয় যুগের অন্যতম প্রধান কবি, এডমান্ড স্পেন্সারের “দা ফেয়ারি কুইন” এর অনুকরণে লেখার চেষ্টা করেছেন। স্পেন্সার ইংরেজী কবিতায় ‘স্পেন্সারীয় স্তবক’ নামক বিশেষ ধরণের কবিতা লেখার রীতি সৃষ্টি করার জন্য বিখ্যাত। একটি স্পেন্সারীয় স্তবকে মোট নয়টি চরণ থাকে, যার প্রথম আটটি চরণের প্রত্যেকটি “ইয়াম্বিক পেন্টামিটার” নামের দশ ধ্বনি যুক্ত বিশেষ ছন্দে লেখা হয়, এবং শেষ চরণটি লেখা হয়, “ইয়াম্বিক হেক্সামিটার” নামের বারো ধ্বনি যুক্ত বিশেষ ছন্দে। এছাড়া এই কবিতার চরণেগুলোর মিলবিন্যাস হয়ে থাকে এরকম, ‘কখকখখগখগগ’। কিটস তাঁর প্রথম কবিতায় এরকম চারটি স্পেন্সারীয় স্তবক রচনা করেছেন। এই কবিতায় কিটস বর্ণনা করেছেন এক প্রভাতের, কিভাবে সকালের আলোতে তিনি চারপাশের সৌন্দর্যকে দেখতে পাচ্ছেন, কিভাবে অতি ক্ষুদ্র ক্ষুদ্র জিনিস তাঁর মনকে আনন্দে ভরে দিচ্ছে, এবং কেন তিনি নিশ্চিতভাবে মনে করছেন যে এমন সকাল দেখলে, যে কারো মন আনন্দে ভরে উঠবে, তার এক চমৎকার বর্ণনা কবিতাটিতে উঠে এসেছে।

কবিতা অনুবাদ করা এমনি কিছুটা কঠিন কেননা কবিতার ভাব ঠিক রাখতে গেলে কবিতার আদল ঠিক রাখা কঠিন হয়ে যায় এবং উল্টোটাও সত্যি। এজন্য অনেকেই কবিতা অনুবাদের ক্ষেত্রে কবিতার ভাবকে প্রাধান্য দিয়ে আদলকে যথাযথভাবে অটুট রাখার চেষ্টা করেন না। তবে আমি চেষ্টা করেছি কবিতার গঠন এবং ভাব দুটোই ঠিক রাখার, কারণ আমি মনে করি, কবিতার আদল এবং কবিতার ভাব দুটোই সমান গুরুত্বপূর্ণ, একটিকে অন্যটির চেয়ে বেশী প্রাধান্য দিয়ে দিলে সেটি আর কবিতা থাকে না। আমি প্রথমে ইংরেজি অক্ষরে কবিতাটি দিয়েছি, এরপরে বাংলায় সেটার অনুবাদ করার চেষ্টা করেছি। অনুবাদের সময় মূল কবিতার প্রতি শ্রদ্ধা রেখে, প্রত্যেক স্তবকে আমি প্রথম আটটি ছত্রে সমানসংখ্যক শব্দ এবং শেষছত্রে একটি অতিরিক্ত শব্দ ব্যবহার করেছি। এছাড়া প্রত্যেক স্তবকে এর মিলবিন্যাস ‘কখকখখগখগগ’ কেও অক্ষুণ্ণ রেখেছি। অনুবাদ কতোটা ভালো কিংবা কতোটা খারাপ হয়েছে, সেটা বিচার করার যোগ্যতা আমার নাই, সেই দায় অন্যদের হাতে ছাড়লাম, আমার জানার দৌড় যতটুক, তা দিয়ে এর চেয়ে ভালো অনুবাদ আমার পক্ষে করা সম্ভব নয়। অনুবাদ কিংবা মুল কবিতাটি সম্পর্কে কোনো মতামত থাকলে, সেটি আমাকে জানালে কৃতার্থ হবো।

বাংলা লিখতে আমি ‘অভ্র’ ব্যবহার করেছি, এই সফটঅয়্যারটির প্রতি আমার অশেষ কৃতজ্ঞতা জ্ঞাপন করছি, নয়তো এই কাজে আরও অনেক বেশী সময় লাগতো।

An Imitation of Spenser

Now Morning from her orient chamber came,
And her first footsteps touch’d a verdant hill;
Crowning its lawny crest with amber flame,
Silv’ring the untainted gushes of its rill;
Which, pure from mossy beds, did down distil,
And after parting beds of simple flowers
By many streams a little lake did fill,
Which round its marge reflected woven bowers,
And, in its middle space, a sky that never lowers.

There the kingfisher saw his plumage bright,
Vying with fish of brilliant dye below,
Whose silken fins, and golden scales’ light
Cast upward, through the waves, a ruby glow:
There saw the swan his neck of arched snow,
And oar’d himself along with majesty;
Sparkled his jetty eyes; his feet did show
Beneath the waves like Afric’s ebony,
And on his back a fay reclined voluptuously.

Ah! could I tell the wonders of an isle
That in that fairest lake had placed been,

তখন হঠাৎ প্রভাত এসেছিলো পুবের কক্ষ পেরিয়ে,
তার প্রথম চরণ রেখেছিলো সে সবুজ ঢালে।
টিলার চূড়াকে রাঙিয়ে দিয়েছিলো সে সোনালী মুকুটে,
রূপোর মতো রঙ মাখিয়েছিলো স্বচ্ছ ঝর্ণার জলে।
শ্যাওলা ঢাকা শয্যা ছেড়ে যা নেমেছিলো চলে,
ছুঁয়ে চলেছিলো অধীর অপেক্ষায় থাকা ফুলের বিছানা।
ছোট্ট হ্রদ গড়ে উঠেছিলো অসংখ্য ধারায় মিলে,
যার পানিতে বিম্বিত ছিলো গাছের সারি বোনা,
আর মাঝে ছিলো আকাশ, যা কখনো মেঘে ঢাকেনা।

সেখানে মাছরাঙা তাকিয়েছিলো নিজের উজ্জ্বল পাখায়,
সৌন্দর্যের প্রতিযোগিতায় মেতেছিলো নিচের রঙিন মাছেদের সাথে।
যারা রেশমী পাখনা আর সোনালি আঁশের আলোকপ্রভায়,
নিচ থেকে উঠে আসা জলস্রোতকে রাঙিয়েছিলো চুনিরঙে।
মুগ্ধ রাজহাঁস দেখেছিলো নিজের বাঁকা শুভ্র গলে,
ধীরে, রাজকীয় ভঙ্গিতে নিজেই জল বেয়ে চলেছিলো।
তার চকচকে কালো চোখ ভরেছিলো দীপ্তির ঝিলিকে,
তার আবলুস কাঠের মতো পা জলে ডুবেছিলো,
যেন কমনীয় এক জলপরী তাঁর পিঠের উপর শুয়েছিলো।

আহ্! যদি বলতে পারতাম সেই দ্বীপের বিস্ময়,
যে জেগে ছিলো সেই শুভ্র হ্রদের বুকে।
যা শুনিয়ে ভাঙতাম রানী ডিডোর শোকের বলয়,
অথবা রাজা লিয়ারের অন্তরের দুঃখ নিতাম কেড়ে।
নিশ্চিত, এমন মন্ত্রমুগ্ধ স্থান পড়েনি আর চোখে,
এক সৌন্দর্য পিপাসীর আঁখিতে যাই দিয়েছে ধরা।
যা ছিলো পান্না সবুজ রুপালি দীপ্তির মাঝে,
যেন চকচকে জলে হঠাৎ প্রতিচ্ছবির ভেসে ওঠা,
কিংবা মেঘের ফাঁকে গাঢ় নীল আকাশের উঁকি দেয়া।

তার চারপাশের সবকিছু ঢলে পড়েছে কোমল জলধিতে,
যেন আর্দ্র নীরবতায় হারিয়ে গিয়েছে সবুজ বনান্তর।
যেন নিবিড় বন্ধুত্বে জল খেলছিল নির্জন তীরে,
হালকা ঢেউ ছুঁয়ে ছুঁয়ে যাচ্ছিলো ফুলেল প্রান্তর।
যেন কুড়োতে চেয়েছিলো কিছু বিন্দু লাল অশ্রুর,
যা গোলাপের কাণ্ড থেকে অবিরাম গড়িয়ে পড়ছিলো।
হয়তো তাতে মিশে ছিল এক গোপন অহংকার,
উদগ্রচিত্তে এক রত্ন পাড়ে ছুড়ে দিতে চেয়েছিলো,
যা দেবী ফ্লোরার পুষ্পমুকুটকেও ছাড়িয়ে যাবার স্বপ্ন দেখেছিলো।

Although we usually associate the word “romantic” with love, its original meaning lies in the pursuit of beauty. And by beauty, we don’t just mean conventionally beautiful things—romanticism is the effort to seek out whatever is ideal, desired, or beautiful in the world around us. To a romantic, ordinary moments—like the rising of the morning sun, the shimmer of sunlight on a pond, or the reflection of the sky in a quiet lake—can stir a profound emotion. A romantic sees what others tend to overlook. The Romantic era in the West began around 1750 and lasted until 1837. If we look closely, we’ll see that in any civilization, artistic and poetic developments often precede the advancement of science and knowledge. Poets and artists live at the frontier of human imagination—this was no less true during the Romantic era. In Bangla literature, however, the Romantic era arrived much later—only after it had come to a close in the West. Among Bengali Romantic poets, Michael Madhusudan Dutt, Biharilal Chakraborty, Rabindranath Tagore, Kazi Nazrul Islam, Mohitlal Majumdar, Satyendranath Dutta, and Sukumar Ray are some of the most prominent names.

One of the major poets of the Western Romantic movement was John Keats—remarkably, who wrote poetry for only seven years. Keats was born in 1795 in London, the capital of England. He lost both his parents at an early age, but thanks to their financial stability, he and his siblings did not face significant economic hardship. He began writing poetry at the age of nineteen; his first poem, An Imitation of Spenser, was composed in 1814. In this work, Keats tried to emulate The Faerie Queene by Edmund Spenser—one of the great poets of the Elizabethan age. Spenser is best known for establishing the form of the Spenserian stanza in English poetry. Each Spenserian stanza consists of nine lines—the first eight written in iambic pentameter (ten syllables per line) and the final line in iambic hexameter (twelve syllables). The rhyme scheme follows the pattern ABABBCBCC. Keats composed four such stanzas in his debut poem. The poem paints a picture of a morning—how the beauty of the light transforms everything around him, how even the smallest things are bringing him joy, and why he believes that such a morning would fill anyone’s heart with delight.

Translating poetry is particularly challenging. If one tries to preserve the structure, it often becomes harder to retain the essence or emotion—and vice versa. That’s why many translators prioritize meaning over form. However, I’ve tried to preserve both structure and spirit, because I believe form and content are equally crucial to poetry. If one outweighs the other, it ceases to be poetry. I first presented the original poem using English alphabets, and then attempted a Bangla translation. To maintain the poem’s structure, I kept the same number of words in the first eight lines of each stanza, and used one additional word in the ninth line—just like in the original. I also retained the rhyme scheme ABABBCBCC in every stanza. I do not presume to judge the quality of the translation; that’s a responsibility I leave to others. With the knowledge I currently possess, I have tried to produce the best translation I could. If you have any thoughts about either the original or the translation, I would be grateful to hear them.

To write in Bangla, I used the software ‘Avro’, to which I remain deeply grateful—without it, this task would have taken far more time.

সাধারণ পদার্থবিজ্ঞান – ১

*আমি সাধারণ পদার্থবিজ্ঞানের উপর বাংলায় একটি বই লিখছি, যার উদ্দেশ্য বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের প্রথম ও দ্বিতীয় বর্ষে পড়ানো হয়, পদার্থবিজ্ঞানের এমন সব বিষয়বস্তুর সাথে বাংলায় শিক্ষার্থীদের পরিচয় করিয়ে দেয়া। এই ওয়েবসাইটে আমি নিয়মিত এই কাজটিও আপলোড করবো।

ভূমিকা

পদার্থবিজ্ঞান বিজ্ঞানের সবচেয়ে পুরোনো এবং সবচেয়ে বহুল ব্যবহৃত শাখাগুলোর একটি। মহাবিশ্বের সবচেয়ে বড় গ্যালাক্সি (Galaxy – ছায়াপথ) থেকে শুরু করে সবচেয়ে ছোট সাবঅ্যাটোমিক পার্টিকেল (Subatomic Particle – উপপারমাণবিক কণিকা) পর্যন্ত সব বস্তু এবং তাদের মিথষ্ক্রিয়া পদার্থবিজ্ঞানের আলোচ্য বিষয়। সুতরাং আমাদের চারপাশের সবকিছুই কোনো না কোনোভাবে পদার্থবিজ্ঞানের সুত্র দিয়ে ব্যাখ্যা করার চেষ্টা করা যেতে পারে, তবে সেটা কতোটুক সঠিক বা ভুল হবে সেটা বিতর্কের বিষয়।

পদার্থবিজ্ঞান একটি ব্যবহারিক বিজ্ঞান, যদিও এর অনেক তত্ত্বীয় ভাগ রয়েছে, এরপরেও তার প্রমাণ সবসময়ই পরীক্ষণ দ্বারা যাচাই করা হয়ে থাকে, যা মূলত পদার্থবিজ্ঞানকে দর্শন থেকে আলাদা করেছে। প্রাকৃতিক নিয়মকানুনের ব্যাখ্যা হিশেবে ‘পদার্থবিজ্ঞান’ বা ইংরেজী ‘ফিজিক্স’ (Physics) শব্দের ব্যবহার খুব বেশীদিনের নয়। মোটামুটিভাবে প্রায় ১৮০০ সাল পর্যন্ত জ্ঞানের এই শাখা ‘প্রাকৃতিক দর্শন’ (natural philosophy) নামে পরিচিত ছিল। যেমন, গতিসূত্র বিষয়ক নিউটনের বিখ্যাত বইয়ের নাম ছিল, ‘Mathematical Principles of Natural Philosophy’, যার বাংলা করলে দাড়ায়, ‘প্রাকৃতিক দর্শনের গাণিতিক সূত্রাবলী’। ইউরোপে ‘আলোকায়ন যুগের’ (Enlightenment Age) (১৬৮৫-১৮১৫) এর শেষে এসে জ্ঞানচর্চাকারীদের মাঝে তত্ত্ব থেকে পরীক্ষণ বেশী গুরুত্বপূর্ণ হয়ে ওঠায় প্রাকৃতিক দর্শন পদার্থবিজ্ঞানে এবং আলকেমি (Alchemy – অপরসায়ন) রসায়নে (Chemistry) পরিণত হয়। ‘Science’ বা ‘বিজ্ঞান’ শব্দের ব্যবহারও একই সময়ে শুরু হয়। অর্থাৎ পদার্থবিজ্ঞানের যে বর্তমান রুপ তা খুব বেশীদিনের নয় এবং এর বেশীরভাগ গুরুত্বপূর্ণ আবিষ্কারই গত ৫০০ বছরের মধ্যে হয়েছে। এই ৫০০ বছরের ইতিহাস ঘাঁটলে দেখা যাবে, পদার্থবিজ্ঞান মূলত দুই ধরণের পন্থা অবলম্বন করে কোনো তত্ত্ব প্রদান করে থাকে। প্রথম পন্থাটিকে বলা যেতে পারে, কেপলারের পন্থা বা ‘উপাত্তের (Data) ভিত্তিতে সিদ্ধান্ত’ (Data-driven Approach) এবং দ্বিতীয় পন্থাটিকে বলা যেতে পারে নিউটনের পন্থা বা ‘প্রাথমিক/মৌলিক নিয়মের ভিত্তিতে সিদ্ধান্ত’ (First-principle Approach)। একটু খেয়াল করলে দেখা যাবে, বিজ্ঞান এবং প্রকৌশলের সকল শাখার সকল গবেষণা কোনো না কোনোভাবে এই দুইটি পন্থার যেকোনো একটি ব্যবহার করে থাকে। কেপলারের নিয়মে নতুন তত্ত্বের জন্য পর্যবেক্ষণ লব্ধ উপাত্তের উপর ভিত্তি করে নতুন তত্ত্বের অবতারণা করা হয়ে থাকে। বর্তমানে পদার্থবিজ্ঞান বাদে অন্যান্য শাখায় মূলত কেপলারের পন্থা বেশী ব্যবহার করা হয়ে থাকে, যেমন, উদাহরণস্বরূপ বলা যেতে পারে, জিনবিজ্ঞানে প্রধানত জিনে থাকা উপাত্তের বিশ্লেষণ করার মাধ্যমে করে নতুন তত্ত্বের অবতারণা করা হয়। একইভাবে রসায়নের মৌলিক পাঁচটি সূত্রই উপাত্তের ভিত্তিতেই প্রণয়ন করা হয়েছে। অপরপক্ষে নিউটনের পন্থা তাঁর সময় থেকে এখন পর্যন্ত পদার্থবিজ্ঞানের প্রধান পন্থা হিশেবে চলে আসছে। এই পন্থায় কোনো সিস্টেম (System – ব্যবস্থা) (সাধারণত পদার্থবিজ্ঞানের পরিভাষায় সিস্টেম বলতে এমন কোনো স্থানকে বোঝানো হয়ে থাকে যেখানে পদার্থবিজ্ঞানের সুত্রগুলো কাজ করে) এর গাণিতিক নিয়মসমূহকে প্রথমে চিহ্নিত করা হয় এবং তার ভিত্তিতে নতুন তত্ত্বের সৃষ্টি করা হয়। পদার্থবিজ্ঞানের প্রধান প্রধান সকল সূত্র এবং তত্ত্ব এই পন্থায় সৃষ্টি করা হয়েছে, যেমন, নিউটনের গতি এবং মহাকর্ষ সূত্র, ম্যাক্সওয়েলের তড়িৎচুম্বকীয় তত্ত্ব, আইনস্টাইনের আপেক্ষিকতার তত্ত্ব প্রভৃতি। তবে বর্তমানে কম্পিউটার বিজ্ঞানের প্রভূত উন্নতির ফলে মেশিন লার্নিং (Machine Learning – মেশিন লার্নিং, কৃত্রিম বুদ্ধিমত্তার (Artificial Intelligence) একটি শাখা) এর ব্যবহার বৃদ্ধি পাওয়ায় এবং উপাত্তের পরিমাণ বৃদ্ধি পাওয়ায় আস্তে আস্তে পদার্থবিজ্ঞানেও কেপলারের পন্থা জনপ্রিয় হয়ে উঠছে।

জ্ঞানের যেকোনো শাখায় ভালো করতে হলে প্রধানত ওই শাখার বিভিন্ন সমস্যা (পদার্থবিজ্ঞানের ক্ষেত্রে গাণিতিক সমস্যা) সমাধানের দক্ষতা অর্জন করতে হয়। কিন্তু বাংলাদেশে পদার্থবিজ্ঞানের শিক্ষায় প্রায় কখনোই এই দক্ষতার প্রতি গুরুত্ব দেয়া হয় না, অন্তত আমার ব্যক্তিগত অভিজ্ঞতাতে এরকমই মনে হয়েছে। আমরা মূলত বিভিন্ন তত্ত্বের ব্যুৎপত্তি (Derivation) নির্ণয় করতে শিখি কিন্তু তার প্রয়োগ প্রায় কখনোই আমরা করি না। ফলে আমাদের মধ্যে সমস্য সমাধানের যে দক্ষতা তা কখনোই গড়ে ওঠে না। পরবর্তীতে যদি কেউ পদার্থবিজ্ঞানে উচ্চশিক্ষা গ্রহণ করতে যায়, তাকে শুরুর দিকে এর ফলে প্রবল সংগ্রামের মধ্যে দিয়ে যেতে হয়, সুতরাং পদার্থবিজ্ঞানে ভালো করতে হলে অবশ্যই সমস্যা-সমাধানের দক্ষতা অর্জন করতে হবে। এছাড়া সাধারণ পদার্থবিজ্ঞান যে শুধুমাত্র পদার্থবিজ্ঞানে ভালো করতে হলে অবশ্যই সমস্যা-সমাধানের দক্ষতা অর্জন করতে হবে। এছাড়া সাধারণ পদার্থবিজ্ঞান যে শুধুমাত্র পদার্থবিজ্ঞানের শিক্ষার্থীরাই পড়ে এমন নয়, বিজ্ঞান এবং প্রকৌশলের প্রায় সব শাখার শিক্ষার্থীদেরও পদার্থবিজ্ঞানের বিভিন্ন বিষয়ের উপর একটি সাধারণ ধারণা রাখতে হয়। তাই বিজ্ঞান ও প্রকৌশলের যেকোনো শাখায় ভালো করতে হলে, সাধারণ পদার্থবিজ্ঞানে ভালো হওয়া, অর্থাৎ পদার্থবিজ্ঞানের সমস্যা-সমাধানের দক্ষতা থাকা খুবই জরুরী।

আমাদের দেশে বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় পর্যায় থেকে অনেক জায়গায় ইংরেজীতে পদার্থবিজ্ঞান পড়ানো হয়ে থাকে, যার উদ্দেশ্য নিঃসন্দেহে মহৎ। যেন এর ফলে শিক্ষার্থীরা একই সাথে পদার্থবিজ্ঞান এবং ইংরেজী উভয় বিষয়েই ভালো হতে পারে। কিন্তু দ্বাদশ শ্রেণী অতিক্রম করা বেশীরভাগ শিক্ষার্থী বাংলাদেশে এতটা দক্ষতা রাখে না যে তাঁরা নিজে নিজে সব পদার্থবিজ্ঞানের পাঠ্যপুস্তক পড়ে সেগুলো সঠিকভাবে বুঝতে পারবে, কারণ পাঠ্যপুস্তকসমূহের ইংরেজী, প্রতিদিনের ব্যবহার্য সাধারণ ইংরেজী থেকে কঠিন হয়ে থাকে। এর ফলে অনেকেই শুরুর দিকে না বুঝতে পেরে পদার্থবিজ্ঞান থেকে আগ্রহ হারিয়ে ফেলে এবং পরবর্তীতে বোঝার পরিবর্তে মুখস্ত করার প্রতি ঝোঁক অনুভব করে। এছাড়া জাতীয় বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ে এখনো বাংলায়ই পদার্থবিজ্ঞানে শেখানো হয়ে থাকে, কিন্তু জাতীয় বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের পদার্থবিজ্ঞান শিক্ষার্থীদের একইভাবে সমস্যা-সমাধানে মনোযোগী না করে তত্ত্ব এবং তার ব্যুৎপত্তি নির্ণয়ে মনোযোগী করানো হয়। এই পুরো ব্যবস্থায় শিক্ষার্থীরাতো প্রবল ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত হয়ই, একই সাথে প্রচুর সম্পদেরও অপচয় হয়ে থাকে, যা আমাদের মতো স্বল্প আয়ের দেশের জন্য খুবই নেতিবাচক। অন্তত স্নাতক পর্যায়ে মাতৃভাষায় বিজ্ঞানচর্চা করার জন্য বেশীরভাগ দেশেই উৎসাহ দেয়া হয়ে থাকে, কেননা কমবয়েসে মাতৃভাষায় বিজ্ঞানচর্চা করলে তা আত্মস্থ করা এবং পরবর্তীতে প্রয়োগ করার দক্ষতা বৃদ্ধি পায়। ইংরেজী একটি ভাষা, কেউ ইংরেজীতে ভালো হলে মাতৃভাষায় শেখা জ্ঞান ইংরেজীতে প্রয়োগ করা তার জন্য তেমন কঠিন কোনো ব্যাপার নয়। কিন্তু বাংলাদেশে অথবা বাংলাভাষায় পদার্থবিজ্ঞানের উপর লেখা খুব বেশী পাঠ্যপুস্তক এমন নেই, যেখানে সমস্যা সমাধানকে মূলে রাখা হয়েছে। আমার বইটির মূল উদ্দেশ্য আসলে এটাই, যেন আমাদের পদার্থবিজ্ঞানের শিক্ষার্থীরা নিজ ভাষায় পদার্থবিজ্ঞান অনুশীলন করতে পারে এবং সমস্যা-সমধানের দক্ষতা অর্জন করতে পারে। বইটি কারো কাজে আসলে আমার এই পরিশ্রম নিঃসন্দেহে সার্থক হবে। এখানে আরেকটি ব্যাপার উল্লেখ করা জরুরী, বইটিতে আমি পদার্থবিজ্ঞানের বিভিন্ন পরিভাষাকে ইংরেজীতে যা বলে সেরকম ভাবেই রাখার চেষ্টা করেছি এবং বাংলা পরিভাষাকে অনুবন্ধনীর ভেতরে ব্যবহার করেছি। এই ব্যবহার উদ্দেশ্যপ্রণোদিত, যেহেতু পদার্থবিজ্ঞান শিক্ষার্থীরা উচ্চতর-শিক্ষার সময়ে ইংরেজীতে এই পরিভাষাগুলো ব্যবহার করবে, তাই আমি চেয়েছি তাদের এখনি এগুলোর সাথে পরিচিত করতে যেন পরবর্তীতে পরিভাষাগুলো অনুবাদ করে নেয়ার প্রয়োজন না পড়ে।

বইয়ের বিভিন্ন অংশে মুদ্রণজনিত এবুং অনুবাদজনিত কোনো ত্রুটি থাকলে, আমাকে জানালে কৃতার্থ হবো। এছাড়া কোনো অংশ নিয়ে কোনো পরামর্শ থাকলেও আমাকে জানালে, আমি সেই অনুযায়ী পরিবর্তন বা পরিবর্ধন করার চেষ্টা করবো।

‘আধুনিক’ কবিতা বলতে একটি বিশেষ ধরণ এবং বিশেষ সময়ের কবিতাকে বোঝানো হয়ে থাকে। প্রতীচ্যে (পশ্চিমা বিশ্বে) উনবিংশ শতাব্দীর শেষে এসে শিল্পবিপ্লবের ফলে নগরসমুহের আমূল পরিবর্তন এবং বিংশ শতাব্দীর শুরুতে প্রথম বিশ্বযুদ্ধের ভয়াবহতা দেখার পরে গণমানুষের মাঝে পুরাতন রীতিনীতি এবং আদর্শের প্রতি একধরণের অবিশ্বাস জন্ম নেয় যার ফলাফল এই সময়ের সাহিত্য এবং সংস্কৃতিতে ব্যাপকভাবে পরিলক্ষিত হয়। এই সময়ের কবিরাও পুরাতন ধাঁচের কবিতা লেখা বাদ দিয়ে পরীক্ষা-নিরীক্ষামূলক ভাবে বিভিন্ন নতুন ধরণের কবিতা লেখা শুরু করেন। এই পরিবর্তন শুধু কবিতার আদল পরিবর্তনেই সীমাবদ্ধ ছিল না, কবিতার বিষয়বস্তুতেও পুরাতনকে বাদ দিয়ে নতুনকে গ্রহণ করার কথা বারবার উঠে এসেছে বিভিন্ন সময়ে বিভিন্ন কবির কবিতায়।

মোটামুটিভাবে পাশ্চাত্য কবিতার ক্ষেত্রে ১৮৯০ সাল থেকে ১৯৫০ সাল পর্যন্ত সময়কে আধুনিক যুগ হিশেবে বর্ণনা করা হয়ে থাকে। কিন্তু বাংলা সাহিত্যে আধুনিকতা এসে পৌছায় প্রায় ১৯৩০ এর দিকে ‘তিরিশের পাঁচ কবি’র হাত ধরে। জীবনানন্দ দাশ, অমিয় চক্রবর্তী, সুধীন্দ্রনাথ দত্ত, বিষ্ণু দে এবং বুদ্ধদেব বসু এই পাঁচজনকে বলা হয়ে থাকে তিরিশের পাঁচ কবি। মধ্যযুগ পরবর্তী (১৭৬০ সালের পর) বাংলা সাহিত্য সবসময়ই পাশ্চাত্য সাহিত্য দ্বারা প্রভাবিত ছিল। এই পাশ্চাত্য প্রভাবিত সাহিত্যের সময়কালকে বাংলা সাহিত্য সমালোচকেরা ‘আধুনিক যুগ’ হিশেবে বর্ণনা করে থাকেন। আমি শুরুতে যে আধুনিকের কথা বলেছি এবং এই আধুনিক মোটেই এক নয়। বাংলা কবিতার ক্ষেত্রে এই সময়ে প্রথম প্রধান রীতির প্রবর্তক মাইকেল মধুসূদন দত্ত (১৮২৪-১৮৭৩)। প্রধান রীতি বলতে আমি বুঝাচ্ছি এমন এক ধরণ, যে ধরণে এই সময়ের কবিরা কবিতা লিখেছেন। অর্থাৎ পরবর্তী ধরণ আশার আগপর্যন্ত এই যুগের সব কবি কম বেশী মধুসূদন দত্ত দ্বারা প্রভাবিত ছিলেন। মধুসূদন দত্ত নিজে মূলত পাশ্চাত্যের রেনেসাঁ (১৫০০-১৬৬০) ও রেনেসাঁ পরবর্তী নব্য-ধ্রুপদী (১৬৬০-১৭৯৮) যুগের কবিতা দ্বারা প্রভাবিত ছিলেন। এই যুগের পরবর্তী প্রধান রীতি সৃষ্টি করেন রবীন্দ্রনাথ ঠাকুর (১৮৬১-১৯৪১)। তিনি মূলত পাশ্চাত্য সাহিত্যের রোমান্টিক যুগ (১৭৯৮-১৮৩৭) এবং ভিক্টোরিয়ান যুগের (১৮৩৭-১৯০১) প্রথম দিককার কবিতা দ্বারা প্রভাবিত ছিলেন। এরপরে রবীন্দ্রবলয় ভেঙে পরবর্তী প্রধান রীতি সৃষ্টি করেন তিরিশের পাঁচ কবি। এমন কিন্তু নয় যে মাইকেল মধুসূদন দত্তের সাথে রবীন্দ্রনাথের কোনো বিরোধ ছিল, রবীন্দ্রনাথ মধুসূদন দত্তের অনুরাগী ছিলেন এবং রবীন্দ্রনাথের একদম প্রথমদিককার কিছু কবিতায় মধুসূদন দত্তের প্রভাব লক্ষ্য করা যায়। তেমনি ভাবে তিরিশের পাঁচ কবিও রবীন্দ্রনাথের গুণমুগ্ধ ছিলেন এবং তাঁদের সবার প্রথমদিককার কবিতায় রবীন্দ্রনাথের প্রভাব ছিল সুস্পষ্ট। এঁদের মধ্যে অমিয় চক্রবর্তী এবং সুধীন্দ্রনাথ বিভিন্ন সময়ে রবীন্দ্রনাথের একান্ত এবং সাহিত্য সচিব হিশেবে কাজ করেছেন। খেয়াল করলে দেখা যাবে, মাইকেল মধুসূদন এবং রবীন্দ্রনাথ দুজনেই তাঁদের সমসাময়িক পাশ্চাত্য কবিতার আদলে কবিতা লেখার চেষ্টা করেননি। তাঁরা অসামান্য প্রতিভাবান ছিলেন এবং আমি মনে করি তাঁরা যদি চাইতেন অন্তত কিছু পরিমাণে অবশ্যই লিখতে পারতেন। এদিক থেকে তিরিশের পাঁচ কবি অনন্য। তাঁরা তাঁদের সমসাময়িক সময়ের পাশ্চাত্য কবিতার আদলে কবিতা লিখেছেন যা বাংলা সাহিত্যের ইতিহাসে এক অভূতপূর্ব ঘটনা।

সুধীন্দ্রনাথ দত্ত সম্পর্কে কিছু বলার আগেই ভূমিকা অনেক বড় হয়ে গিয়েছে, পরবর্তী কবিতায় সুধীন্দ্রনাথকে নিয়ে আলোচনা থাকবে। শুধু একটি কথা না বললেই না, বলা হয়ে থাকে বাংলা কবিদের মধ্যে সুধীন্দ্রনাথের কবিতাই সবচেয়ে দুর্বোধ্য। তিনি অবলীলায় এমন সব শব্দ ব্যবহার করেছেন যা জানতে আমার মতো পাঠকদের পাশে অভিধান নিয়ে বসতে হয়। আমি তাঁর কবিতার ভাবগাম্ভীর্য বজায় রাখতে চেষ্টা করেছি ভারী ইংরেজি শব্দ ব্যবহার করার। কারো যদি মনে হয়, আমি ইচ্ছাকৃত ভাবে কঠিন শব্দ ব্যবহার করেছি তবে সেটা একান্তই সুধীন্দ্রনাথের কবিতার প্রতি সম্মান প্রদর্শনের উদ্দেশ্যে, অন্য কোনো কারণে নয়।

অপচয় কবিতাটি একটি সনেট, যার অন্ত্যমিল হলো ‘কখখক কখখক গঘগঘ ঙঙ’। এই কবিতায় কবি, কিভাবে সময়ের সাথে সাথে, মানুষের মন প্রবল ভালোবাসার অনুভুতিকে হারিয়ে ফেলে, ক্ষুদ্র এবং তুচ্ছ বিষয় নিয়ে তিক্ত হয়ে ওঠে সেটার বর্ণনা করেছেন। সুধীন্দ্রনাথের কবিতার আরেকটি বিষয় হচ্ছে দ্ব্যর্থবোধকতা। কবি ঠিক কি কারণে দুঃখ পাচ্ছেন এটা নিশ্চিত ভাবে কবিতা থেকে বোঝা যাচ্ছে না। তিনি তাঁর শুদ্ধ অনুভূতিকে হারিয়ে ফেলেছেন, এটাকে তিনি অপচয় বলছেন নাকি তিনি ভালোবাসার অনুভূতি সৃষ্টি হওয়া কেই অপচয় বলছেন, সেটি নিশ্চিত করে তিনি বুঝতে দেননি। অর্থাৎ কবিতার শেষ দুই ছত্রের মানে এরকমও করা যায় যে, কবি আর প্রেমে পড়তে চাচ্ছেন না, কারণ তিনি জানেন আবারও এভাবে অপচয়ের মধ্যে দিয়ে যাবার হয়ে প্রয়োজন নেই, আবার এমনও মানে করা যায় যে, কবি আশা করছেন তিনি আবারও প্রেমে পড়বেন, শুদ্ধ চৈতন্য আবারও ফিরে পাবেন।

কবিতা অনুবাদ করা এমনি কিছুটা কঠিন কেননা কবিতার ভাব ঠিক রাখতে গেলে কবিতার আদল ঠিক রাখা কঠিন হয়ে যায় এবং উল্টোটাও সত্যি। এজন্য অনেকেই কবিতা অনুবাদের ক্ষেত্রে কবিতার ভাবকে প্রাধান্য দিয়ে আদলকে যথাযথভাবে অটুট রাখার চেষ্টা করেন না। তবে আমি চেষ্টা করেছি কবিতার গঠন এবং ভাব দুটোই ঠিক রাখার, কারণ আমি মনে করি, কবিতার আদল এবং কবিতার ভাব দুটোই সমান গুরুত্বপূর্ণ, একটিকে অন্যটির চেয়ে বেশী প্রাধান্য দিয়ে দিলে সেটি আর কবিতা থাকে না। আমি প্রথমে বাংলা অক্ষরে কবিতাটি দিয়েছি, এরপরে ইংরেজিতে সেটার অনুবাদ করার চেষ্টা করেছি। অনুবাদ কতোটা ভালো কিংবা কতোটা খারাপ হয়েছে, সেটা বিচার করার যোগ্যতা আমার নাই, সেই দায় অন্যদের হাতে ছাড়লাম, আমার জানার দৌড় যতটুক, তা দিয়ে এর চেয়ে ভালো অনুবাদ আমার পক্ষে করা সম্ভব নয়। অনুবাদ কিংবা মুল কবিতাটি সম্পর্কে কোনো মতামত থাকলে, সেটি আমাকে জানালে কৃতার্থ হবো।

বাংলা লিখতে আমি ‘অভ্র’ ব্যবহার করেছি, এই সফটঅয়্যারটির প্রতি আমার অশেষ কৃতজ্ঞতা জ্ঞাপন করছি, নয়তো এই কাজে আরও অনেক বেশী সময় লাগতো।

অপচয়

প্রেয়সী, আছে কি মনে সে-প্রথম বাঙ্ময় রজনী,
ফেনিল মদিরা-মত্ত জনতার উল্বণ উল্লাস,
বাঁশির বর্বর কান্না, মৃদঙ্গের আদিম উচ্ছ্বাস,
অন্তরের অন্ধকারে অনঙ্গের লঘু পদধ্বনি?

আছে কি স্মরণে, সখী, উৎসবের উগ্র উন্মাদনা,
করদ্বয়ে পরিপ্লুতি, চারি চক্ষে প্রগল্ভ বিস্ময়,
শূন্য পথে দুটি যাত্রী, সহসা লজ্জার পরাজয়,
প্রতিজ্ঞার বহুলতা, আশ্লেষ যুগ্ম প্রবর্তনা?

সে-শুদ্ধ চৈতন্য, হায়, বৃথা তর্কে আজি দিশাহারা,
বন্ধ্য স্পর্শে পরিণত স্বপ্নপ্রসূ সে-গাঢ় চুম্বন;
ভ্রাম্যমাণ আলেয়ারে ভেবেছিল বুঝি ধ্রুবতারা,
অকূল পাথারে তাই মগ্নতরী আমার যৌবন।।

মরে না দুরাশা তবু; মনে হয় এ-নিঃস্ব জগতে
এতখানি অপচয় ঘটাবে না বিধি কোনও মতে।।

Putrefaction

Love, do you remember that bewitching night,
when people outside were gleefully carousing,
there were boorish music and primal noise of drums,
and love was creeping slowly into the darkness of our heart?

Do you remember, love, those maddening festivities,
when our hands were shivering and our eyes were awestruck,
two people on an empty road suddenly leaving their quandaries behind,
were ready to promise fulfillment and were eager to embrace.

That pure affection is lost somewhere in futile squabbles,
that dreamy kiss of love has changed into bitter eschewal,
Surely I went after the Fata Morgana thought it to be real,
Now I have nowhere to go and my boat is going under the sea.

Even in this utter desolation, my heart dares to hope,
Maybe God will save me from being ruined like this!

The term ‘modernist poetry’ refers to a specific type of poetry which was written in a specific timeline. In the wake of the rapid expansion of the towns and cities in the western hemisphere due to the industrial revolution in the end of 19th century and the horrifying experience of World War I in the beginning of 20th century, common people started to raise doubt about the traditional ways of life and the ideals they held in reverence for centuries. This affected the literature and culture very deeply and created a new era called ‘modernity’. In this period, in their poems, the poets proclaimed the ideas of embracing new ideals and leaving the old ones behind. They also experimented to a great extent to create novel forms of poetry which was evident in the works of many poets of this era.

Most of the historians would agree that the modernist era in poetry started in the 1890s and ended after World War II in the 1950s. However, in Bangla literature ‘modernity’ arrived about during the 1930s with the works of Jibanananda Das, Amiya Chakravarty, Sudhindranath Dutta, Bishnu Dey and Buddhadeva Bose, together known as ‘five poets of the thirties’. After the middle ages (after 1760) of Bangla literature, it was always, to some extent, influenced by the western literature. This era is known as the modern age of Bangla literature. The meaning of ‘modern’ here is very different from the way the term ‘modern’ is used in western literature. First major Bangali poet of this era was Michael Madhusudan Dutt (1824-1873). He created novel styles and genres of poetry which were primarily influenced by Renaissance (1500-1660) and Neoclassical (1660-1798) poetry from western hemisphere. All Bangali poets of his time were, to some extent, influenced by the styles and genres created by Michael Madhusudan. The next major shift in terms of styles and genres was created by Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) who was primarily influenced by Romantic (1798-1837) and first half of Victorian era (1837-1901) poetry. And, the next shift was brought by the aforementioned five poets. While Rabindranath created a paradigm shift, he was an admirer of the works of Michael Madhusudan and the poems he wrote in his early days were heavily influenced by the work of Michael Madhusudan. Similarly, the early poems of the five poets were also heavily influenced by Rabindranath Tagore and they were an ardent admirer of their predecessor. Among them, Amiya Chakravarthy and Sudhindranath Dutta worked as personal and literary assistants to Rabindranath Tagore for years. It should be noted that the poetry of both Michael Madhusudan and Rabindranath were based on the era that predated them. They never tried to write poems in their contemporary western styles even though both of them were well read about their contemporary western literature. They were greatly talented, I believe if they wanted they could of course be able to write like their contemporaries of western world, but for some unknown reasons they never tried to. In that regard, the five poets of the thirties were very unique. They wrote modern poems in the same era of the western poets which was unprecedented in the history of Bangla poetry.

The introduction of this poem has already become very lengthy before Sudhindranath Dutta could be introduced. In the next poem, I will discuss more about him and his works. It is said that Sudhindranath Dutta was the most incomprehensible among Bangali poets. In his poems, with great ease he used tough words which would be difficult to read through without the use of a dictionary for a typical reader. I had to use a dictionary many times while reading through his works. While doing the translations I tried to use similar sturdy words so that the sturdiness of original poems are not lost. The purpose of using tough words was only to pay tribute to the original poet, nothing other than that.

This poem is a sonnet whose pattern is ‘ABBA ABBA CDCD EE’ In this poem, the poet is describing when people fall out of love throughout seemingly small arguments and fights. Another feature of Sudhindranath’s poetry is to have an overall ambiguous tone. It is not clear why the poet is lamenting, is it because he has fallen out of love or is it because he was once in love? Hence, the meaning of last two verses can either be the poets desire to fall in love and feel that pure affection again or it can be his desire to not fall in love again since he knows it will be lost in the end.

It is more difficult to translate poetry than prose because of the strictness of their form. If one wants to keep the form intact then it becomes harder to pass on the theme/idea in a precise manner and vice versa. That’s why we often see that the translators try to keep the idea more intact than the form. But I believe in keeping both the ideas and the forms intact, because I think, the form and the idea both are equally important for poetry, if more emphasis is put on a particular side then we can’t call it poetry anymore. At first, I gave the poem in Bangla alphabets, then I provided the translation in English. I don’t know how well or poorly my translations are, I am leaving this judgment on others. However, I believe this is the best translation I can do with my current level of understanding/knowledge. I will be grateful if you provide your opinion on the translation or the original poem itself.

মোটামুটিভাবে পাশ্চাত্য কবিতার ক্ষেত্রে ১৮৯০ সাল থেকে ১৯৫০ সাল পর্যন্ত সময়কে আধুনিক যুগ হিশেবে বর্ণনা করা হয়ে থাকে। এজরা পাউন্ড এই আধুনিক যুগের প্রথম দিককার অন্যতম প্রধান কবি। তিনি আধুনিক যুগের সবচেয়ে বড় কবিতা ‘দা ক্যান্টোস’ এর রচয়িতা। আবার আধুনিক যুগের সবচেয়ে ছোট কবিতা ‘ইন এ স্টেশন অফ দা মেট্রো’ এর রচয়িতা ও তিনি। অসাধারণ প্রতিভাবান এই কবি ১৮৮৫ সালের ৩০ অক্টোবর মার্কিন যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের আইডাহো অঙ্গরাজ্যে জন্মগ্রহণ করেন। ২৩ বছর বয়েসে তিনি আমেরিকা ত্যাগ করে ইউরোপে গমন করেন এবং জীবনের বেশীরভাগ সময় সেখানে অতিবাহিত করেন। দ্বিতীয় বিশ্বযুদ্ধ চলাকালীন সময়ে তিনি ইহুদীবিদ্বেষ এবং ইতালীয় স্বৈরশাসক বেনিতো মুসোলিনিকে সমর্থন দেবার কারণে ব্যাপক সমালোচনার স্বীকার হন। দ্বিতীয় বিশ্বযুদ্ধের পর তিনি মার্কিন প্রশাসনের হাতে গ্রেপ্তার হন এবং পরবর্তী ১৩ বছর তিনি বন্দীজীবন যাপন করেন। ১৯৫৮ সালে মুক্তি পাবার পরে তিনি ইতালীতে ফিরে যান এবং ১৯৭২ সালের ১ নভেম্বর ইতালীর ভেনিস শহরে শেষ নিঃশ্বাস ত্যাগ করেন।

এজরা পাউন্ড ১৯১২ সালে ফ্রান্সের প্যারিস শহরের কনকর্ডে পাতাল রেলস্টেশনে বসে ট্রেনের জন্য অপেক্ষা করার সময়ে ‘ইন এ স্টেশন অফ দা মেট্রো’ কবিতাটি রচনা করেন। তিনি এখানে প্রায়ান্ধকার পাতাল রেলস্টেশনে আসা অগণিত মানুষের চেহারার দিকে তাকিয়ে তাঁর কি মনে হচ্ছে সেটা বর্ণনা করার চেষ্টা করেছেন। এটি খুবই ছোট, মাত্র দুই ছত্রের একটি কবিতা, যার প্রথম ছত্রে রয়েছে ৮টি শব্দ এবং পরবর্তী ছত্রে রয়েছে ৬টি শব্দ। ধারণা করা হয়ে থাকে, হাইকু নামের একটি বিশেষ ধরণের ছোট জাপানী কবিতা থেকে অনুপ্রাণিত হয়ে এজরা পাউন্ড এই কবিতাটি লেখেন এবং লেখার ক্ষেত্রে তিনি সনেটে ব্যবহৃত ৮-৬ সংখ্যার অনুপাত ব্যবহার করেন। অনেকেই এই কবিতাটিকে এই কারণে ইংরেজি ভাষায় লেখা প্রথম হাইকু বলে থাকেন। পরবর্তীতে এজরা পাউন্ড আরো অনেক হাইকু লিখেছেন কিন্তু কোনোটার জনপ্রিয়তাই ‘ইন এ স্টেশন অফ দা মেট্রো’কে ছাড়িয়ে যায় নি। এজরা পাউন্ড এবং হাইকু নিয়ে তাঁর পরীক্ষা-নিরীক্ষা সম্পর্কে বিশদ ভাবে জানার পরে আমি নিজে উদ্দীপ্ত হয়ে বেশ কিছু হাইকু লেখার চেষ্টা করেছিলাম, যেগুলো কোনো এক সময় হয়তোবা এখানে প্রকাশ করবো।

কবিতা অনুবাদ করা এমনি কিছুটা কঠিন কেননা কবিতার ভাব ঠিক রাখতে গেলে কবিতার আদল ঠিক রাখা কঠিন হয়ে যায় এবং উল্টোটাও সত্যি। এজন্য অনেকেই কবিতা অনুবাদের ক্ষেত্রে কবিতার ভাবকে প্রাধান্য দিয়ে আদলকে যথাযথভাবে অটুট রাখার চেষ্টা করেন না। তবে আমি চেষ্টা করেছি কবিতার গঠন এবং ভাব দুটোই ঠিক রাখার, কারণ আমি মনে করি, কবিতার আদল এবং কবিতার ভাব দুটোই সমান গুরুত্বপূর্ণ, একটিকে অন্যটির চেয়ে বেশী প্রাধান্য দিয়ে দিলে সেটি আর কবিতা থাকে না। আমি প্রথমে ইংরেজি অক্ষরে কবিতাটি দিয়েছি, এরপরে বাংলায় সেটার অনুবাদ করার চেষ্টা করেছি। অনুবাদের সময় আদল ঠিক রাখতে গিয়ে আমি প্রথম ছত্রে ৮টি শব্দ এবং দ্বিতীয় ৬টি শব্দ ব্যবহার করেছি। অনুবাদ কতোটা ভালো কিংবা কতোটা খারাপ হয়েছে, সেটা বিচার করার যোগ্যতা আমার নাই, সেই দায় অন্যদের হাতে ছাড়লাম, আমার জানার দৌড় যতটুক, তা দিয়ে এর চেয়ে ভালো অনুবাদ আমার পক্ষে করা সম্ভব নয়। অনুবাদ কিংবা মুল কবিতাটি সম্পর্কে কোনো মতামত থাকলে, সেটি আমাকে জানালে কৃতার্থ হবো।

বাংলা লিখতে আমি ‘অভ্র’ ব্যবহার করেছি, এই সফটঅয়্যারটির প্রতি আমার অশেষ কৃতজ্ঞতা জ্ঞাপন করছি, নয়তো এই কাজে আরও অনেক বেশী সময় লাগতো।

The term ‘modernist poetry’ refers to a specific type of poetry which was written in a specific timeline. In the wake of the rapid expansion of the towns and cities in the western hemisphere due to the industrial revolution in the end of 19th century and the horrifying experience of World War I in the beginning of 20th century, common people started to raise doubts about the traditional ways of life and the ideals they held in reverence for centuries. It affected the literature and culture very deeply and created a new era called ‘modernity’. In this period, in their poems, the poets proclaimed the ideas of embracing new ideals and leaving the old ones behind. They also experimented to a great extent to create novel forms of poetry which was evident in the works of many poets of this era.

Most of the historians would agree that the modernist era in poetry started in the 1890s and ended after World War II in the 1950s. Ezra Pound was one of the most influential figures in the early modernist period. He wrote ‘The Cantos’, the longest poem of this era. He also wrote ‘In a Station of the Metro’ which was the shortest poem of this era. He was born on 30 October 1885 in Idaho territory (now Idaho state) in the United States. At the age of 23, this uncanny genius left his country and moved to Europe where he spent most of his remaining days. During the second world war, he was heavily criticized due to his anti-Semitism and supporting of the Italian dictator Benito Mussolini. He was arrested for treason by the US administration after the war and was imprisoned for the next 13 years. After he was released in 1958, he went back to Italy and spent the rest of his days there. He died on November 1, 1972 in the city of Venice in Italy.

Ezra Pound wrote ‘In a Station of the Metro’ in 1912 while waiting for a metro in the Concorde metro station in Paris, France. He was looking at the faces of the crowd in a dark ambience of the underground station and imagined an image that either resembled or juxtaposed the image he was experiencing in front of him. It is a very short poem of two verses only. In the first verse there are 8 words and in the second one there are 6 words. He was thought to be inspired by the ‘haiku’s, a special type of small Japanese poetry and he took the numbers 8 and 6 from the number of verses used in Sonnets. Many critics consider this poem to be the first haiku of the English language. Ezra Pound wrote many haikus after this one but none of them became so popular as ‘In a Station of the Metro’. The works of Ezra Pound were a true inspiration for me and after learning much about his experiments on haikus, I tried to write a few of them which I may share sometimes later on this platform.

It is more difficult to translate poetry than prose because of the strictness of their form. If one wants to keep the form intact then it becomes harder to pass on the theme/idea in a precise manner and vice versa. That’s why we often see that the translators try to keep the idea more intact than the form. But I believe in keeping both the ideas and the forms intact, because I think, the form and the idea both are equally important for poetry, if more emphasis is put on a particular side then we can’t call it poetry anymore. At first, I gave the poem in English alphabets, then I provided the translation Bangla. To keep the form intact I used the same number of words that Ezra Pound used in his poem. I don’t know how well or poorly my translations are, I am leaving this judgment on others. However, I believe this is the best translation I can do with my current level of understanding/knowledge. I will be grateful if you provide your opinion on the translation or the original poem itself.

For writing in Bangla, I used the software Avro. I am very much grateful to this software. Without Avro this work would have taken a lot more time than it is taking now.

Dastoor – Habib Jalib

উর্দু কবিতার প্রধান ভাগ দুইটি, গজল (غزل) (উচ্চারণ – গাযাল্) এবং নজম (نظم) (উচ্চারণ নাযাম্), এখানে আমি যে কবিতাটি অনুবাদ করেছি, সেটি পাকিস্তানি কবি হাবিব জালিবের লেখা ‘দাস্তুর’ নামের একটি নজম জাতীয় কবিতা। হাবিব জালিবের আসল নাম হাবিব আহমাদ, জালিব তার ছদ্মনাম, যার অর্থ এমন কোনো ব্যক্তি, ‘যে নিজে আকর্ষণীয়’ অথবা ‘যে অন্য কাউকে কোনো কিছুর দিকে আকর্ষিত করছে’। উর্দু কবিরা প্রায়ই এরকম ছদ্মনাম নিয়ে থাকেন, যেমন, মির্জা আসাদুল্লাহ বেগ বললে হয়তো অনেকেরই চিনতে কষ্ট হবে, যিনি তাঁর ছদ্মনাম ‘মির্জা গালিব’ এ বেশী পরিচিত।

হাবিব জালিব ১৯২৮ সালের ২৪ মার্চ ব্রিটিশ ভারতের পাঞ্জাব প্রদেশের হোশিয়ারপুরে (বর্তমানে ভারতের পাঞ্জাব প্রদেশে) জন্মগ্রহণ করেন। পরবর্তীতে দেশভাগের সময় তিনি তৎকালীন পশ্চিম পাকিস্তানে চলে যান এবং বাকী জীবন সেখানেই অতিবাহিত করেন। হাবিব জালিব ছিলেন মূলত একজন বিদ্রোহী কবি যাকে স্বাধীনতা-উত্তর পাকিস্তানের প্রধান কবি ফাইজ আহমেদ ফাইজ ‘জনতার কবি’ হিশেবে আখ্যায়িত করেছিলেন। তিনি সারাজীবন রাষ্ট্রের স্বৈরতা, স্বেচ্ছাচারিতা এবং সামরিক জান্তার জোর করে ক্ষমতা দখলের বিরুদ্ধে কথা বলে গেছেন, যার ফলে বিভিন্ন একনায়কের শাসনামলে তাকে বহুবার জেল খাটতে হয়েছে। তিনি ১৯৯৩ সালের ১২ মার্চ পাকিস্তানের লাহোরে মৃত্যুবরণ করেন। ২০০৯ সালে পাকিস্তান সরকার তাকে সর্বোচ্চ বেসামরিক খেতাব নিশান-ই-ইমতিয়াজ (মরণোত্তর) এ ভূষিত করে।

আগেই বলা হয়েছে, দাস্তুর একটি নজম জাতীয় কবিতা। গজলের মতো নজমের কোনো বিশেষ ছন্দোবদ্ধতা নেই। অন্যান্য ভাষায় সাধারণত কবিতা বলতে যা বুঝানো হয়ে থাকে, উর্দুতে সেই ধরণের কবিতাকেই নজম বলা হয়ে থাকে। ১৯৬২ সালে আইয়ুব খান তৈরি করা সুযোগসন্ধানী সংবিধানের সমালোচনা করে হাবিব জালিব দাস্তুর রচনা করেন। দাস্তুর শব্দের আভিধানিক অর্থ প্রথা কিংবা প্রচলিত রীতিনীতি। এটি খুবই শক্তিশালী একটি স্বৈরাচার-বিরোধী কবিতা, বিভিন্ন সময়ে ভারত এবং পাকিস্তান উভয়দেশেই রাষ্ট্রের স্বৈরাচারী আচরণের বিরোধিতা করতে এই কবিতাটি ব্যবহার করা হয়েছে। এই কবিতায় স্বৈরাচারী শাসন ব্যবস্থার মিথ্যা গৌরবের সমালোচনা করা হয়েছে, যেখানে কবি বারবার এটাই বলেছেন যে, এই অন্তঃসারশূন্য উন্নতির আখ্যায়িকাকে তিনি অবিশ্বাস এবং অস্বীকার করেন। আমার বিশ্বাস, রাষ্ট্রযন্ত্রের অন্যায় এবং নিপীড়নের সাথে পরিচিত সকল দেশের, সকল কালের, সকল মানুষ এই কবিতাটির সাথে একাত্মতা বোধ করতে পারবেন।

কবিতা অনুবাদ করা এমনি কিছুটা কঠিন কেননা কবিতার ভাব ঠিক রাখতে গেলে কবিতার আদল ঠিক রাখা কঠিন হয়ে যায় এবং উল্টোটাও সত্যি। এজন্য অনেকেই কবিতা অনুবাদের ক্ষেত্রে কবিতার ভাবকে প্রাধান্য দিয়ে আদলকে যথাযথভাবে অটুট রাখার চেষ্টা করেন না। তবে আমি চেষ্টা করেছি কবিতার গঠন এবং ভাব দুটোই ঠিক রাখার, কারণ আমি মনে করি, কবিতার আদল এবং কবিতার ভাব দুটোই সমান গুরুত্বপূর্ণ, একটিকে অন্যটির চেয়ে বেশী প্রাধান্য দিয়ে দিলে সেটি আর কবিতা থাকে না। আমি প্রথমে উর্দু অক্ষরে কবিতাটি দিয়েছি, এরপরে সেই উর্দুকে ইংরেজি অক্ষরে লিখলে সেটা কেমন হবে সেটা দিয়েছি (কারণ আমাদের অনেকেই উর্দু শুনলে বুঝতে পারেন, কিন্তু উর্দু পড়তে পারেন না), এরপরে ইংরেজি এবং বাংলায় সেটার অনুবাদ করার চেষ্টা করেছি। অনুবাদ কতোটা ভালো কিংবা কতোটা খারাপ হয়েছে, সেটা বিচার করার যোগ্যতা আমার নাই, সেই দায় অন্যদের হাতে ছাড়লাম, আমার জানার দৌড় যতটুক, তা দিয়ে এর চেয়ে ভালো অনুবাদ আমার পক্ষে করা সম্ভব নয়। অনুবাদ কিংবা মুল কবিতাটি সম্পর্কে কোনো মতামত থাকলে, সেটি আমাকে জানালে কৃতার্থ হবো।

বাংলা লিখতে আমি ‘অভ্র’ ব্যবহার করেছি, এবং উর্দু লিখতে আমি ‘ইজি উর্দু টাইপিং’ (Easy Urdu Typing) নামে অভ্র জাতীয় একটি সফটঅয়্যার ব্যবহার করেছি, এই দুইটি সফটঅয়্যারের প্রতি আমার অশেষ কৃতজ্ঞতা জ্ঞাপন করছি, নয়তো এই কাজে আরও অনেক বেশী সময় লাগতো।

دستور- حبیب جالب

دیپ جس کا محلات ہی میں جلے
چند لوگوں کی خوشیوں کو لے کر چلے
وہ جو سائے میں ہر مصلحت کے پلے
ایسے دستور کو، صبح بے نور کو
میں نہیں مانتا، میں نہیں جانتا

میں بھی خائف نہیں تختہ دار سے
میں بھی منصور ہوں کہہ دو اغیار سے
کیوں ڈراتے ہو زنداں کی دیوار سے
ظلم کی بات کو، جہل کی رات کو
میں نہیں مانتا، میں نہیں جانتا

پھول شاخوں پہ کھلنے لگے، تم کہو
جام رندوں کو ملنے لگے، تم کہو
چاک سینوں کے سلنے لگے، تم کہو

অন্ধকার সকাল – হাবিব জালিব

যে আলোয় শুধু তোমাদের মহল আলোকিত হয়,
তাতে শুধু তোমাদের মতো অল্প কিছু লোকেরই ভালো হয়,
তোমরা যারা সবসময় নিজেদের স্বার্থপরতার আড়ালে লুকিয়ে থাকো,
তোমাদের আলো আমার চোখে সূর্যহীন অন্ধকার সকালের মতো,
এই আলো আমি চিনি না, তোমাদের আমি বিশ্বাসও করি না!

আমি তোমাদের ফাঁসিকাঠকে ভয় করি না,
আমি তোমাদের অন্যায়ের প্রতিবাদে হাসতে হাসতে জীবন দিতে পারি,
কেন তোমাদের ওই জেলখানার ভয় আমাকে দেখাও?
তোমাদের দেখানো ভয় আমার চোখে অজ্ঞতার যুগের মতো,
এই অজ্ঞতাকে আমি চিনি না, তোমাদের আমি বিশ্বাসও করি না!

তোমরা বলো যে, তোমাদের কারণে চারদিকে ফুল ফুটছে,
তোমরা বলো যে, তোমাদের কারণে মানুষ সুখে এবং সন্তুষ্টিতে দিন কাটাচ্ছে,
তোমরা বলো যে, তোমাদের কারণে আমাদের হৃদয়ের ক্ষত সেরে উঠছে,
তোমাদের নির্লজ্জ মিথ্যা আমার চোখে বিবেক এবং বুদ্ধির নির্বাসনের মতো,
এই নির্লজ্জতাকে আমি চিনি না, তোমাদের আমি বিশ্বাসও করি না!

তোমরা যুগে যুগে আমাদের সুখ এবং শান্তি কেড়ে নিয়েছ,
ভেবোনা তোমাদের এই জাদু আমাদের উপর আর চলবে,
কেনো সবসময় আমাদের মুক্ত করবার অভিনয় করো?
তোমাদের মুক্তি আমার চোখে নির্মম উপহাসের মতো, যদিও অনেকে তোমাদের বিশ্বাস করে, কিন্তু

Your Ways – Habib Jalib

With the lamp that only shines your palaces,
With the idea that only serves your motives,
People like you only hide behind the shadows of their selfishness,
I deem your ways of enlightenment to be a morning without light.
Neither I approve of them, nor do I believe you!

I am not afraid of your gallows,
I have sacrificed my life a long ago to fight your tyranny,
Why do you threaten me with your prison walls?
I deem your ways of oppression to be a night of ignorance.
Neither I approve of them, nor do I believe you!

You want us to believe that flowers are blooming everywhere,
You want us to believe that people are happy and content,
You want us to believe that wounds of our hearts are healing,
I deem your ways of lying to be utter nonsense,
Neither I approve of them, nor do I believe you!

You have stolen away our peace and sanity for centuries,
Your magic will not work on us anymore,
Why do you pretend that you came to free us from these sufferings?
I deem your ways of liberation to be an absolute treachery,
even though some may believe you,
Neither I approve of them, nor do I believe you!

Urdu poetries are mainly classified into two classes, ghazal (غزل) and nazm (نظم). The poetry I translated above is a nazm named ‘Dastoor’ written by Pakistani poet Habib Jalib. Habib Jalib was born as Habib Ahmad, ‘Jalib’ was his pen-name which means ‘an attractive person’ or ‘a person who attracts others to a cause’. It is a pretty common custom among the Urdu poets to assume a pen-name. Usually they are known by a combination of their first name and the pen-name, as Mirza Asadullah Baig Khan is not a very familiar name but many of us know him by the name ‘Mirza Ghalib’.

Habib Jalib was born in Hoshiarpur in British Punjab (Now in Punjab, India) on 24 March, 1924. After the partition, he moved to Pakistan and spent the rest of his life there. He was primarily a revolutionary poet who was dubbed as the ‘poet of the masses’ by the great Faiz Ahmed Faiz, arguably the most influential poet of Pakistan after its liberation. For all of his life, he was always a staunch critic of military regimes of Pakistan and in later part of his life he was vocal against the authoritarian nature of democratic governments as well. Due to his criticism he was jailed several times by the people in power but they always found him uncompromising towards his view on both the oppression and the oppressors till his last breath. He died on 12 March, 1993 in the city of Lahore in Pakistan. In 2009, he was posthumously awarded with the highest civil decoration of Pakistan ‘Nishan-e-Imtiaz’ by the Government of Pakistan.

It is mentioned before that Dastoor is a nazm and unlike ghazals, nazms don’t have any strict meter. In general terms, the traditional poetries that we see in other languages are called nazms in Urdu. Habib Jalib wrote ‘Dastoor’ in 1962 in response to the carpetbagging alteration of Pakistan’s constitution tailored by Ayub Khan’s regime. The meaning of the word ‘Dastoor’ is ‘Custom’ or ‘Tradition’. It is a very strong anti-establishment poem, it has been used in both India and Pakistan at different times against the authoritarian nature of the state. In this poem, the false pride of authoritarian regimes is heavily criticized where the poet strongly refused to acknowledge and believe the hollow narratives of development of such governments. I do believe, any human being who is familiar with the oppression of authoritarian and totalitarian regimes will be able to relate to this poem irrespective of their time and ethnicity.

Then I gave the translations in both Bangla and English. I don’t know how well or poorly my translations are, I am leaving this judgment on others. However, I believe this is the best translation I can do with my current level of understanding/knowledge. I will be grateful if you provide your opinion on the translation or the original poem itself.
